I've always had cats that come in and out freely. I would hate to keep a cat cooped up.

I used to have a friend though that had two beautiful pedigree cats (I'm not sure what they were) and she kept them in a pen during the day and just allowed them into the house for a while in the evenings. I hated to see them in the pen.

Sorry typo in the thread title!

It's rather dangerous for me to let my cats out because the farm has 5 dogs and I don't think they'll leave my cats alone. I do, however, let my cats walk on our stoop for a few minutes a day - mostly when I know the dogs are in their houses or out with their owners. Inside the house, my cats roam freely and I would never keep them in a cage or a pen.

My cats are basically free-range. That means I let them go in and out as they wish. Strangely though, they are not that keen to go out by themselves. It's only when I go outside, too, that they follow. Then when I go back in, they come in together with me. Maybe it's because I adopted them after they had been abandoned. So they might still have this fear of being abandoned again.

My cat is free to roam within the confine's of the house but we keep her indoors for most of the day as there have been a few cats fighting in the neighbourhood recently and I don't want her to get injured. Like Victor Leigh's cats mine ususally only seems to enjoy going outside if we humans go outside or are in the garden. I've never heard of people keeping their cats in a pen all day, that sounds a little cruel.

Nope. Our cats are strictly indoor cats now. I had a bunch of cats growing up that were inside/outside cats and they never lasted longer than a year or two. We lived out in the country and they'd run off with other cats or something would happen.... whatever happened, though, it was enough that I won't have inside/outside cats any more.

Yes, I have seen cats being kept in cages. These are normally Persians. The reason why they are kept in cages is that they are expensive and easily stolen. I have also seen some cats kept on leashes. I particularly remember one that belonged to the owner of my regular breakfast stop. She told me that it was a Burmese breed and she didn't want it lose it because it's very difficult to find one. This is a Burmese cat:

Just a few minutes every week? Or do you mean everyday? Your ragdoll doesn't want to go outside or you wouldn't let it go outside so that it won't do a disappearing act?

Oh, really? That's probably why they are called Ragdolls, I suppose. Just be a nice, soft furry breathing toy. Come to think of it, there are quite a few people who are like Ragdolls, too. Not the tiniest little bit of fighting spirit in them at all.

Wait, who's twenty pounds? Mindy, the Ragdoll? That's a big Ragdoll. What about Pazzo? What is he?
