There has been some discussion on other threads regarding indoor and outdoor cats, so I thought it would be interesting to start a dedicated thread on the topic.

I am lucky enough to live in a pretty safe area with a nice big garden and adjoining outside space so my 4 adult cats regularly go outside, especially in the warmer weather. My 2 kittens will be allowed out gradually when they are older enough, initially under supervision.

I live in the country but I don't consider it safe at all. People shoot animals and ask questions later here also there is a lot of traffic spending down the road. So, I do not let my cats outside. Booger and Tigger show no interest in even wanting out. They like it inside where things are safe and calm. You can leave a door open and they will just sit there in the open door and look out, but they never cross the threshold. Bella, I do take out on a leash and she enjoys it very much. I really think she is more dog like than cat because she likes water and she likes going out on a leash. I do have the feral cat that I feed and every time he doesn't show up to eat I worry something has happened to him.

My cat stays inside all the time. I had her declawed when she was a baby, because she was tearing up all my furniture.

I would not want her outside anyway, because I would be afraid something would happen to her. I think I am so much closer to my cat, since she is inside with me all the time.

LOL Speaking of being outside my husband just told me that he must not of shut the back door good the other night and he noticed it was open. Booger wondered out and then hubby found him under the back porch yowling his head off and freaking out because he was outside. It's a darn good thing he found him because if something would have happened to him it might have been grounds for divorce! OK I'm just kidding but I would have been very ticked off for a VERY long time!

I live in a small village, and let both of my cats roam outside. They usually meow at the door when they want to go in and out.

My cats are primarily indoor cats, but we sometimes let them out in the backyard or they sneak out when we open the door. They don't go far- all they want to do is go sit under the trees outside. They never roam off, just curl up under the trees and sleep. We get them back in when we go inside or if we end up leaving them out for a bit, they come meow at the door when they want to come in.

We own 2 cats one is mostly indoors as she is an older cat but will go outside on occasion, mostly indoors though. My other cat he is an indoor/outdoor cat. If he had his way he would probably be outside 24/7.

Sophie will be a indoor cat.
We're hoping when she's older she'll be able to just stay inside the garden like our other cat Lucy used to.

We live in the country and have quite a bit of land. My cats go outside during the day, but when it becomes dark they come in. We have coyotes around here. There has also been sightings of black bear.

My cat is strictly indoors. When he was younger we got him front declawed and so I would be afraid that not only would he not know how to defend himself outside, that he would not have the tools even if he knew how. Either way, it is enough for me to keep him close. When he was younger he would try to sneak outside every once in a while, and I have taken him out on my porch with me, but I do not let him out unattended. Now especially since I live in the heart of a metropolitan area, and in an apartment, it would not even be an option. This way he is safe and I have peace of mind!

No, they do not. They are strictly indoor cats now.

When I was younger, we only ever had the opposite. We always had outside cats, but that meant there was a fairly high rate of them eventually running off during mating seasons or getting hit by cars, etc. When we got my oldest cat, my mom insisted that it be inside-only and that was that.

All my cats stay inside all the time. If I had a fence around my yard I would indeed let them go outside as often as they liked. I can't afford to put up a fence right now, so they will have to be happy indoors. I wish I had a big outside porch like my daughter has for her dogs. She has 4 dogs, and she can let them go in and out when she opens the slide door. She didn't always have this luxury for them. She now has moved, and does have this way of convenience for her dogs now. I think this way of living would be great for cats as well.

I let my cats roam outside all the time. But we live basically in the woods on a road with few/no cars. Also, my cats are pretty good about just hanging out at my house and not venturing too far off.

My cat is an indoor cat. I am not sure what would happen if I would let him just wander outside, he would like too, but I don't trust the neighbors as we live in a Townhouse community. I know there are cat lovers and cat haters and we have coyotes outside.
There is a little forest right next to the house, but a street is not that far either and since he is not used to being outside I would be too worried. My husband thinks that his instinct will help him, but I have my doubts, his instinct fails regularly when it comes to food.

My cats only go outside when I do. Not sure why. Maybe it's because they were all abandoned cats I found in the market. So they may not be going outside for fear of being abandoned again.

Our cat rarely goes outside. If she does, she stays in our yard because we have a 6-foot privacy fence around our entire yard. We have three dogs, so even though she wants to stay outside she is afraid of our other dogs and will only go when she knows the dogs are not around.

That's odd. Why are they scared to go outside? Are there dogs outside?

My cat stays inside most of the time. We live on a farm holding with acres of lawn but there are 5 dogs around the holding, which belonged to our neighbours and the landlord. So, Snowy doesn't go out except sit on the table on our stoop now and day. Arnia (a great dane) likes to visit us and somehow, Snowy isn't afraid of her and Arnia seems to like her. However, I will not take any chances.
