This should be a feline extreme sport. I do not know what on earth is in the cat food I've been feeding Zod, but he has this talent for throwing cat litter ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE BATHROOM, and down the hall. I questioned this at first, and thought perhaps he was just treading it out there, but noooooo.

I witnessed the litter tossing. Tiny white pebbles moving at projectile high speeds out of the bathroom door, and out into my hallway, to be trodden into the soles of my feet, so I wince and swear in the cat's general direction.

I cannot be the only designated human slave with this problem. How far does your cat toss his/her litter?

Your post put a smile on my face, Evilsprinkles. Yes, it could be an olympic sport for cats! LOL!
I know there are special mats on the market you put in front of your litter box so the excess litter doesn't get spread around the house, but this doesn't work when your kitty is a litter tosser. The only thing that might help is when you have a closed off litter box with a door, but my cats are scared of it and I haven't managed teaching them to use it. Especially my blind kitty is scared a lot by it so I guess I have to take the litter tossing for granted :)

Yes, yes, we deal with it, too. Did you know there are shields and covers to prevent it, though? We've had both the full top covers so that the cats have to climb into it, and the ones where they just raise the sides basically so that the cat can't really kick it out very easily. It hits the new rails instead.

I'm debating mocking up a cover for it, so we don't have the Olympic litter tossing experience. We have the tray sitting on a mat on the floor, so I think a cover will help a lot. Even just a cardboard box around it so he isn't throwing it everywhere, might be a good thing. Although saying that, he might scratch the ever living hell out of it, and then I'll have shredded cardboard, AND litter tossing to deal with.

Hahahaha I'm glad it made you smile! I find it's best to have a sense of humour where animals are concerned, especially cats. He's currently going through his nightly episode of The Zoomies, where he's running about like an idiot on crack, making those daft low meowling noises, and dangling from everything in a mentalist manner..

We keep old shopping bags near the litter box to scoop their stuff into and dispose of it. For some reason, our one cat will always pull a bag into the litter box to cover it.

Very true, as a cat owner you do need a sense of humor otherwise certain pranks would drive you up the wall haha!

Hmm, yeah. It was a good idea, but then you're going to run into the scratching, no doubt. What about a plastic tub of some sort instead? Even just one tipped on its side and slide under/over the back half would block a bunch of the tossing.

"but he has this talent for throwing cat litter ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE BATHROOM." Haha! I was picturing this in my head and I spit out my water. That's hilarious. Our cats don't toss the litter all, but rather they just scratch it and cover up the poo and pee they just released.

One strategy is not to have too much litter in the box. The only two problems with that is having to scoop the box more often to keep from running out, and also having clumps stick to the bottom of the box.

My home is comical at best. I have an insane cat, two bullbreed dogs, one of which is brain-damaged and utterly nuts in a lovable way, and if I didn't have a sense of humour, I would be going insane myself. You absolutely have to have a sense of humour when you keep animals, because they create so much mess, that it borders on ridiculous. I wouldn't have it any other way, though.

The worst is when you walk barefoot and you find litter in unexpected places. We have our box in the laundry room and sometimes I'm in the kitchen and I am stepping on litter. It grosses me out to no end!

I mentioned one of those plastic covers in an earlier post.

I just ran across this, though:

That might work, too. You could still do it with a large cardboard box, if you don't want to buy or make a box for it. The issue with this route is that you still have to clean it out of the bottom box instead of it being immediately tossed back into the litter box like it would with an over-the-top cover.

What I do is put my cat litter in a plastic storage tote of the same size. The bottom of the litter try fits perfectly inside, and the sides are high that the cat gets a sense of privacy as well as giving them a high surface to clean there feet on. No mess from litter. The tote is around $7 you can buy a walmart, just measure you litter try to make sure it fits.

It also keeps the smell more trapped inside, as well, its really a win win idea.
