My great niece is with me, and ask me to ask why cats have hairballs, and vomit. Could anyone explain this to he?. I know my cats get hairballs, if the carpet has any hair on it. Now, I use a magic eraser to get up all excess hair from the carpet, and all my cats hardly ever have hairball issues.

It's because they groom themselves with their tongues. It's not uncommon for them to ingest some of the hair as they're cleaning and as it builds up, they end up needing to cough up a hairball. If they have shorter hair or you groom them regularly, then it's less likely to happen very often.

Side fact: Rabbits sometimes get hairballs, too, because they groom themselves the same way. They do not have the ability to throw it back up, though, so it can actually be fatal if they aren't treated or able to pass it otherwise before it gets too big.

Hair on the carpet shouldn't have anything to do with a cat getting a hairball. It is from their grooming. Tell her if she decided to clean herself with her tongue she might get a few hairballs when she gets to her hair on her head. :D

You said you use a magic eraser to get excess hair from the carpet... How? I have hardwood floors but would be interested in how to get it from my furniture.
